My 5 favorite apps

Today is the first theme day of the WordCount Blogathon – My 5 favorite apps (original title on my blog, huh? – this is what you get at 10:30pm when I’m in the middle of trying to figure out how to edit a video and just realized I haven’t yet posted today!)

DictionaryDictionary.com – I love this free app! I read a lot and almost always have my phone within arm’s reach. I use the Dictionary.com app mostly to look up word while I’m reading. I then add them to my favorites and try to use them in my own writing in order to solidify my memory of the definition.

InstapaperInstapaper – This app is $2.99, but it’s definitely worth it. I use Instapaper all the time on the computer to save blogs and articles to read later. I don’t travel as much as I used to since I work from home, but it still comes in handy when I’m on a bus . . . or even if I’m reading articles in bed and want to save them for later. It sure beats emailing links to myself!

goodreadsGoodreads – The Goodreads app is fantastic! I spent a great deal of time one night organizing all of my books into categories so now whenever I go shopping, I just have to pull up the app and scroll through my to-reads by genre. It makes feeding my book addiction so much easier!

ColorNoteColorNote – It’s pretty much just a standard notepad app, but I love it. I like organizing my different notes by color and that I can use straight text or write a list. I use this for everything – grocery lists, blog ideas, book and movie lists, writing ideas while I’m out (or lying in bed).

where's my waterWhere’s My Water? – Okay, I had to put a frivolous one in here! This is pretty much the only game I play on my phone (and its spin-off, Where’s My Perry?). It’s $0.99 and every time they add a new section of the game, it’s another $0.99, but I keep buying them :P

WordCount Blogathon Day 1

The WordCount Blogathon

Happy June!

Today kicks off the first day of the WordCount Blogathon. This is my third year participating and it’s been a lot of fun in the past, so I’m looking forward to giving it another go this year! . . . Plus, this year I’m already blogging every day, so it shouldn’t be too difficult :)

That’s all I have today . . . It’s a lazy post because I’ll be at the Wizard World Comic Con in Philly all day and I’m not sure I’ll have the energy for a post tonight! . . . You can expect some pictures for tomorrow’s Silent Sunday post!

Five Question Friday – May 31, 2013

Answer the questions in the comments or on your own blog (but leave a link)!

1. What is an acceptable age for girls to start dating?

I think it 100% depends on the maturity level of the child. (Also, why does this question just about girls? Why not ask about an acceptable age for boys to date?) It also depends on what is considered “dating.” I’ve seen kids at 12 who consider themselves to be dating because they hold hand while walking home from school.

2. Do you think your kids should have summer homework?

Ugh. Yes and no. My daughter getS summer homework and I’m not opposed to the idea. I understand the purpose and I think it can definitely be beneficial, but last year her homework packet was ridiculous. I think some math pages and a reading log are plenty.

3. Would you prefer to live without AC or heat?

Heat. Definitely heat. You can always put more clothes/blankets/gloves on . . . there’s only so much you can take off!

4. What the worst thing about staying in a hotel? (Besides not being with your family)

Unless it’s a crappy hotel, nothing. I don’t stay in hotels very often . . . when I do, I enjoy the whole “escape” of it . . . not having to worry about the responsibilities at home . . . I can’t think of anything negative  . . . unless, like I said, it’s a crappy hotel.

5. So, do your kids really get “104 days of summer vacation”? (Bonus points for those of you that get this reference!)

I totally get the reference! LOVE LOVE LOVE Phineas and Ferb! . . . . As for the question, she doesn’t get anywhere close to 104 days of summer vacation. She gets out June 21st and goes back a day or two after Labor Day, which comes out to 73 or 74 days.

My brain is fried

I was trying to write a well-organized blog post about some of my thoughts and theories about Doctor Who, but nothing came out quite right. I considered writing a few other things, but I didn’t even manage to get out of the “thinking about it” stage with those.

I’ve been a bit overloaded with work for the past couple of weeks and I finally caught up this morning. I think I just don’t feel like thinking right now. So this is pretty much the extent of my blog post tonight. A few words thrown on to the page to meet this whole blog every day thing. I’ll try harder tomorrow. Promise.

***Side note – this post marks 4 complete months of blogging every day . . . only 8 more to go . . . I’m a third of the way there!***

Five Question Friday – April 26, 2013

Answer the questions in the comments or on your own blog (but leave a link)!

1. Who drives when your family is together, you or your spouse?

Considering that we don’t have a car, usually it’s neither. We’re public transportation people! We will rent a car on occasion and in that case, my boyfriend drives . . . since I don’t even have my license (I didn’t lose it or anything . . . I’ve never had it).

2. Are you an introvert or extrovert?

Um, both. It depends on the moment and circumstance and the people.

3. Are you married to an introvert or extrovert?

I’m not married . . . but my boyfriend is definitely an introvert.

4. What’s your favorite type of social media?

Definitely Facebook. I’d actually prefer Google+, but since nobody is actually on there, I’ll stick with Facebook. I don’t like everything about their practices, but I it’s the best way for me to stay connected to those who are important to me.

5. What’s your favorite way to “recharge”?

Quiet time to myself with a good book . . . or Doctor Who . . . or a nice selection of horror movies

Five Question Friday – April 19, 2013

This week’s Five Question Friday is a courtesy of Sharon over at The Real Sharon. There was no Five Question Friday post for tonight, so she dug through and found some old questions. These are from May 7, 2010. Answer the questions in the comments or on your own blog (but leave a link)!

1. What is your worst memory of your siblings?

Ha! My little sister is only 8 years old and my other sister lives states away and I haven’t seen her in person since she was 2 ½ years old. So I don’t really have any traditional sibling horror stories! I guess for Erin I could say the time she and my daughter destroyed my daughter’s bedroom and it took me weeks to clean! And for Chris (for those who didn’t click on the link, she was my foster sister before she was adopted by another family and moved states away) . . . the day she left.

2. What was YOUR naughtiest childhood memory? (Must be something YOU did, no pawning it off on someone else!)

The naughtiest thing I did as a child was mouth off to my mom. Otherwise, I think I was a pretty good kid . . . just had some temper and self-control issues when it came to my mouth! . . . I was unintentionally naughty once . . . when I was in second grade, my mom let me walk home from school with my friends on the promise that I would come right home. Being 8 years old, I forgot and ended up over a friend’s house. My mom was frantic searching for me. I remember her face when she walked through the door of my friend’s house. I immediately remembered and felt horrible!

3. Where do you like to go to relax?

My bed. I love my bed. I love my bed a lot.

4. What was the last thing you won?

This is tough. It’s been a while since I’ve entered anything . . . besides the lottery, which I obviously never win. The only thing I can remember is from two years ago. I spent $5 on 50/50 tickets on closing day of my daughter’s baseball league and won $80!

5. If you could be on a game show, which would you choose?

I think I have to steal Sharon’s answer here and say Wheel of Fortune. I kick ass at Wheel of Fortune! Oh! Or Lingo . . . does anyone else remember Lingo? . . . I keep trying to get my boyfriend to try out for Jeopardy because he always seems to outplay the people actually competing. Once, I actually kept track of his answers . . . including taking money off for when he was wrong. He would have beat the winner by a couple thousand dollars!

Scattegories Meme

I stole this from Sharon.

Five Question Friday – April 12, 2013

Answer the questions in the comments or on your own blog (but leave a link)!

1. Where do you hide things from your kids?

Our middle bedroom, which is actually used as my boyfriend’s office/walk-in closet. My daughter never has a reason to go in there, so it’s perfect.

2. What is your favorite rainy day activity for bored toddlers?

Oy, it’s been years since I’ve had to entertain a toddler. With my daughter, it was always pretty easy. We’d play games, watch a movie, read books, play dress up, build with LEGOS . . . she’s always been an easy child to entertain.

Here's a picture of my daughter when she was a toddler . . . entertaining herself in my friend's dog's cage . . . we actually had to lock her out of it and she was not happy!

Here’s a picture of my daughter when she was a toddler . . . entertaining herself in my friend’s dog’s cage . . . we actually had to lock her out of it and she was not happy!

3. Are you a punctual person or are you always running a few minutes (or more!) late??

I am mostly a punctual person. When I worked a “normal” job, I always had to be at least 10 minutes early. For social activities, ideally I show up exactly on time . . . and I’ve actually become really good at that as long as public transportation isn’t involved (or even if it is and I have a store where I can hang out). However, I’ve become much less obsessed with being early/on time when taking the bus or train. I shoot for whatever’s closest, even if it’s 10-15 minutes late . . . . but I will let the person I’m meeting know.

4. When eating out, do you prefer off the beaten path “Mom and Pop” cafes or tried and true national food chains?

Generally, I prefer Mom & Pop places. Philly is chock full of them and most of the time, the food, drinks, and service are significantly better than the chains. I have a few favorite places (South Street Souvlaki, Eulogy, Moriarity’s, Shan Chaun), but I’m always happy to check out some place new. We will hit a chain every so often. It’s just not my first choice.

5. Does your significant other snore? Do YOU snore?

YES! – Read all about it here. Different people have told me different things. I know I at least snore lightly. My boyfriend acts like it’s not that lightly, but I have friends who say they can barely hear me. Obviously, I can’t hear myself, so I’m going with my friends since my boyfriend only brings up me snoring when I start bitching about his! (Seriously though, if you didn’t click the link, I can hear him through closed doors and on a different floor of the house. It’s really, really bad!)

Five Question Friday – April 5, 2013

Answer the questions in the comments or on your own blog (but leave a link)!

1. Would you go to your high school reunion?

An official high school reunion? Maybe. Probably not. I majored in creative writing at an art school and once or twice a year, the writers get together for dinner. I go to that as often as possible. I didn’t start going to that school until half-way through my sophomore year, so my writing classes were all with the year below me. While I did have a few friends in my grade, I was closest with the other writers in my class.

2. What’s something that you’ve recently splurged on; either for yourself or someone else?

I haven’t really splurged on anything recently, but I will be soon. In the next week or so, I’ll be buying our (mine and my boyfriend’s – the kiddo gets in for free) tickets to the Wizard World Comic Con in Philly. If all goes well, I’ll also be purchasing tickets for the John Barrowman VIP Experience.

3. How do you handle your child’s fever?

If it’s below 102 degrees and she’s not grumpy, I let it ride. If it’s above 102 degrees or she’s feeling miserable, I’ll give her Motrin or Tylenol. I also have cooling pads for her head. Other than dealing with the actual fever, I just make sure she gets a lot of rest and drinks plenty of fluids. Luckily, she doesn’t get sick very often.

4. What’s the nicest thing to happen to you lately?

I just had a little movie night with my daughter. We watched Flight of the Navigator (she loved it!)and had some popcorn. I adore those little moments :)

5. What is your current favorite song?

This changes pretty frequently, but at this exact minute, I’d have to say So They Say from Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog . . . .

What’s the point?

What's the pointI’m beginning to question this whole blog-every-day thing. I’m 3 months in to my 1-year goal and I’m feeling a bit burnt out. I don’t want to post a bunch of drivel. I don’t want this blog to pile up with written excrement. And I just don’t always feel like writing anything at all.

Sometimes the days and weeks are long and the idea of stringing together a coherent thought, much less something thought-provoking and meaningful, is enough make me long for cold pillows and warm blankets. Sometimes I’ve spent so much time online working (and yeah, putzing around) that I just want to slam the laptop closed and walk away. Sometimes no matter how many words I put on a page, nothing seems to come out properly and I question my abilities as a writer.

Sometimes I just don’t want to write. I don’t want to blog. And really, what’s the big deal if I don’t? The world won’t crumble to pieces if I skip a day blogging. Hell, I doubt many (anyone?) would notice. So what’s the purpose of this everyday blogging goal?

The more I think about it, the answer’s pretty simple – the more I write . . . well, the more I write. The fact that I’m blurting out this random nothingness right now means that I had to actually sit in front of my computer screen and open up a Word doc. When it’s finished, I’ll save it in the April 2013 folder, which is pretty damn close to my poetry folder and my short story folder and my novel folder. And going through this whole process makes me more likely to open up one of those folders and start working.

I first started this blog just over two years ago because I was really starting to focus on a freelance career, but I had few samples under my belt. It had been years since I had written regularly and I thought this would help. And it has . . . in more ways than I had intended.

I’ve come to love the blogging world. I love the interaction . . . the ability to connect with people on such a personal level in a way that’s (mostly) comfortable for me and my whole social anxiety thing. I love the community. I’ve met some truly amazing people all because of blogging.

Blogging has also awakened every part of my writing spirit, which has lain dormant for so long. Just the act of writing, of blogging, makes me want to write more. Whether I’m blogging about my family or about important political issues or books and movies or just answering silly meme questions, it keeps me constantly thinking about words . . . and this act of blogging is going to help me stop half-assing it through my books . . . to actually finish one or two or all three of them . . . I’ve even started looking at publishers for one that is almost complete.

So even though tonight is one of those times I would rather close the laptop and walk away, I decided to blog anyway. I used to be forced to write several times a day . . . and then I would go home and write some more because once I start, I feel the need to keep going.

Maybe it’s not imperative that I skip zero days of blogging over the course of a year, but it’s an exercise in dedication, in building a habit . . . some kind of routine and commitment . . . and while sometimes what I write will be drivel, it will also be a step towards something better.
